My friend, my hero

When girls support each other.

Hey girls! Let’s say this together: we are more powerful when we support each other!

This a lesson that I learned from my bestie Tshego! Two years ago, I had sex with bae without taking any steps to protect myself from pregnancy, like using a condom. So I was very worried when my period got late. I thought I was pregnant, and needed someone to confide it.

Tshego and I talk about everything, and I can count on her to be supportive, so I told her. I’m really happy that I did! She told to take a deep breath, and try not to worry too much. She suggested going to the clinic for a pregnancy test, and accompanied me there.

She held my hand every step of the way, which I really appreciate about my bestie! My tests results came back negative, but that’s not all the help Tshego gave me. She also gave me a sex talk. She explained getting your period means that your body can fall pregnant. She also said that even though it is natural to develop romantic and sexual feelings, it is important to also know about sex.

For example, do you know that you can protect yourself from pregnancy? Tshego advised me to use condoms because unlike other methods of protecting girls from falling pregnant, condoms also offer protection against STIs, including HIV. Her advice helped me to make better decisions about my sex life. I now use condoms, which are free at public hospitals and clinics.

This is why she is my hero; she supported me when I was scared, and empowered me with information so I could make better choices!
